How do I ingest data into ESOStats?

Data is ingested into ESOStats by uploading CSV files generated by ESO and sent to AAL. Each file is parsed and the metadata is prepared so that it can be inserted into the Lens database. The basic workflow is as follows:

  1. Go to https://reports.datacentral.org.au/esostats/upload
  2. Select the file to upload using the "Choose file" button
  3. Click upload and wait; the upload may take a few minutes
  4. A possible future improvement: The ability to track the status of the upload in the browser; this is currently written to log files which are inaccessible to the user

During ingestion, the system checks to see if there is a corresponding proposal in the ESO database (using http://archive.eso.org/tap_obs and the pyVO library) and if so, obtaining extra metadata for it, including non-Australian investigators. It then cross-matches the investigators with existing Lens users; for existing Lens users their account details are used, otherwise they are managed as "non-Lens Users" in the database. The system also checks to make sure that the instrument in the CSV is in the database; new ESO instruments can be added in the ESOStats Admin section.

Once the proposals are ingested into the system, the proposals need to be checked, (1) to make sure that investigators are correctly matched and entered, and (2) to update any requests, allocations or completion information. An automated completion checking system is in development, as per Appendix A of the requirements.

If you get an Internal Server Error during the upload, there's a chance that there is a new instrument in your CSV. You can add it in the ESOStats Admin portal. A more detailed report on errors like this is in the works.
